Phillies Open a Four Game Series Versus the Cardinals

The Phillies (32-38) just completed a sweep of the Atlanta Braves (36-35) for the first time since 2011. Tonight the Phillies move on to St. Louis to face the Cardinals (39-33). The Phillies will send rookie right-hander, David Buchanan (2-3 5.97 ERA), to the hill. Buchanan took the win in his last start despite giving up three long balls over five innings. Buchanan will look to limit the long ball, which he has given up seven in his first five major league starts. Buchanan will be opposed by one of the Cardinals’ young guns, Shelby Miller (7-5 3.42 ERA). Miller took the no decision in his last start versus the Washington Nationals going 6.2 innings giving up one run on four hits.

The Phillies have called up Cameron Rupp and sent down Aaron Alther back to Reading. Cameron’s stay could be long with the injury to Wil Nieves hamstring in the ninth inning of yesterday’s game. Also, Cody Asche has made it to St. Louis. It is expected that Asche will be taken off the DL either after tonight’s game or tomorrow with Ronny Cedeno being sent back to Leigh Valley.

Game Notes:

  • Phillies are coming off a season high 18 hits versus Atlanta.
  • Pettibone will undergo right shoulder surgery and is expected to be ready for next spring.
