Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera set for All-Star debut

SAN DIEGO — Behind San Francisco Giants RHP Johnny Cueto, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera and the National League All-Stars will take on LHP Chris Sale and the American League All-Stars Tuesday evening at the 87th Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Petco Park.

Herrera is among 79 total players selected to this year's Midsummer Classic after batting .294/.378/.427 with 10 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and 33 RBIs through 89 games. He will be managed by New York Mets skipper Terry Collins, in opposition of defending World Series champion manager Ned Yost of the Kansas City Royals.

The American League has won 15 of the last 20 All-Star Games, dating back to July 10, 2001, at Safeco Field.

Tonight will be the second of four consecutive Midsummer Classic in which a National League team will be the host. Last year at Great American Ball Park, home of the Cincinnati Reds, the American League bested the National League, 6-3. The National League East's Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals are set to host the next two All-Star Games in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim outfielder and Millville, New Jersey, native Mike Trout will look to earn the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award for the third consecutive year. The 24-year-old has already been selected to five Midsummer Classics. Former Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels, now of the Texas Rangers, is expected to make a relief appearance for the American League. Hamels has been named an All-Star four times over his 11-year career, previously in 2007, 2011 and 2012.
