The Phillies made the first of their roster cuts today when they assigned seven players to the minor league camp. According to the Inquirer's Bob Brookover, they are (in no particular order):
- RHP Kyle Simon
- LHP Joe Savery
- C Tommy Joseph
- 3B Cody Asche
- RHP J.C. Ramirez
- LHP Adam Morgan
Joseph and Asche have been impressive for the Phillies in their limited action so far. However, they are not in the Phillies immediate plans and head to minor league camp to prepare for the season in the minors. Best not get their hopes up, right? Same goes for Morgan and Simon who head to the minors for some extra seasoning.
For Joe Savery, he finds himself as the fourth lefty in the Phillies crowded bullpen. The Phillies used a minor league option to send him to the minor leagues. The former Phillies first round pick remains on the Phillies 40-man roster.
Ramirez and Martinez both were invitees to big league camp after being cut from the 40-man roster in the offseason. Martinez must have really failed to impress this camp because in theory a player who can play many positions would be useful during a Spring Training camp when there are daily games that starters play just four or five innings. Yet, off he goes after hitting .154 in nine games and making two errors. Ramirez pitched to a 10.12 ERA in three appearances in big league camp.
