Phillies pull off comeback, tenth-inning win over Mets

Final (10): Phillies 6, Mets 2

QUEENS, NEW YORK—The top of the eighth inning was over, until it wasn't.

José Reyes settled under Freddy Galvis' two-out, two-strike foul pop-up, chased it…and dropped it off his glove into fair territory. It put Galvis on first, Cameron Rupp on third, and gave the Phillies new life when Andrés Blanco doubled over the head of Yoenis Céspedes.

The miraculous play tied Tuesday night's game at two runs apiece. The Phillies, who had struggled all night driving home runners, delivered when it was most improbable and most necessary.

They put four more on the board in the tenth and beat the Mets for their first win in four tries against the division rivals in 2017.

Odúbel Herrera socked a solo homer to deep right in the first inning off Wheeler, but the Mets answered quickly. Against Eflin, who was just brought up to replace the injured Clay Buchholz in the Phillies' rotation, New York managed two runs. Jay Bruce hit an RBI single that scored Michael Conforto, then Yoenis Céspedes scooted home on a wild pitch that Cameron Rupp couldn't handle.

After the first inning, both teams managed six scoreless innings each. The Phillies put the leadoff hitter on base multiple times, and managed a baserunner in six of the first seven innings, but couldn't capitalize. Wheeler's pitch count removed him from the game after five innings; Eflin exited after five as well.

Galvis' foul pop-up with a full count and two outs in the eighth created some excitement when Reyes not only dropped it, but knocked it into fair territory and put runners on first and third. Blanco tied the game on a ground-rule double after working the count full against Jerry Blevins. Galvis, who didn't make it to second on the pop-up due to a supposed lack of effort on the bases, wasn't able to score the go-ahead run.

Héctor Neris and Luis García shut down the Mets in the eighth and ninth to send the ballgame to extra innings.

In the tenth, Michael Saunders led off with a single off the leg of new Mets pitcher Rafael MonteroTommy Joseph singled into right, and a great baserunning play by Saunders put him on third and runners on the corners. Rupp lifted a sac fly to the warning track in right, and pinch-hitter Aaron Altherr singled to score Joseph when Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud couldn't handle the throw. To cap off a four-run tenth, Daniel Nava broke an 0-for-5 night with a two-run single up the middle that barely evaded shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera.

Close Joaquín Benoit finished off the Mets in the tenth as the Phillies eked out a much-needed win, their first victory over the Mets in 2017.

Right-hander Vince Velasquez will take the ball tomorrow night at 7:10, opposing righty Robert Gsellman.
