Slated to begin the unofficial second half of the season Friday evening against the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park, the Philadelphia Phillies are opting to add another piece to their bench, recalling third baseman Mitch Walding.
In a corresponding move, the Phillies optioned right-hander Enyel De Los Santos to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Walding, 25, is hitless through nine career major league plate appearances thus far with seven strikeouts and one walk. In 20 Triple-A games since his last big league stint, Walding slashed .267/.375/.560 with 11 singles, to doubles, one triple, six home runs, 11 walks and 14 RBI spanning 88 plate appearances.
De Los Santos, 22, is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA, 8-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.500 WHIP through two starts and 10 2/3 innings, all on the road. The right-hander made a spot start in the first-half finale on Sunday, with Zach Eflin scratched due to a blister.
The Phillies bench, in addition to Walding, includes outfielder Aaron Altherr, infielders Jesmuel Valentin and Trevor Plouffe, along with the non-starting catcher, eitehr Jorge Alfaro or Andrew Knapp.
The Phillies acquired De Los Santos from the Padres this past offseason in exchange for shortstop Freddy Galvis. Galvis will face his former club for the first time on Friday.
