Phillies Refute Eskin Report that Montgomery is Out…Again

Earlier today, reports surfaced, through Howard Eskin, that David Montgomery was told he would not return as President of the Phillies. Apparently, those reports are not confirmed as the Phillies released a statement that reveals that no decision has been made regarding Montgomery's status with the organiztion.

"Of foremost concern to this organization is David Montgomery's full recovery from his surgery this past spring. There has been no determination made regarding his future status. Phillies ownership will continue to confer with David about their collective vision for the future."

This isn't the first time Howard Eskin reported that Montgomery was out as President. Back in October, Eskin reported that sources told him that Montgomery's cancer was a convenient excuse to push him out.

Howard Eskin reported tonight that, according to sources, David Montgomery’s leave absence for cancer was a misnomer and that he was actually “pushed out,” using his cancer as a “convenient story.” Howard, always with the inflammatory tone.

Eskin also said that – and you can probably guess what’s coming here – limited partner John Middleton, who has been the subject of quite a few reports this week, now has a 48% ownership stake in the team and is aggressively pursuing a majority ownership. As a limited partner, he can’t gain majority control without a unanimous vote, according to Eskin, who cited the recent owner deaths and Montgomery being “out” as a reason why Middleton is having an easier time buying up a larger chunk of the team.

The Phillies refuted that report from Eskin as well in a press release.

"Contrary to the Fox 29 report last night, David Montgomery's leave of absence from the Phillies is entirely due to his medical condition, as previously announced. There is absolutely no other reason for his leave from active involvement in Phillies management."

The only thing we know for sure about the David Montgomery situation is this: nothing is for sure. Hopefully his recovery continues along a good path though, whether or not he returns to the Phillies.
