Matt Gelb along with the rest of the Phillies beats tweeted that the Phillies released Ronny Cedeno which shortens the back up SS battle to Cesar Hernandez and Reid Brignac. Hernandez hasn't made many appearances there over the years which may favor Brignac but Hernandez shows a better bat. It could mean that the Phillies are going outside the organization (Cesar Izturis just opted out of his deal with Houston but he's virtually identical to Cedeno).
Cedeno's spring line of .182/.250/.273 is certainly nothing to write home about and if you subscribe to advanced stats his career bWAR (Baseball-Reference's WAR formula) of -1.4 suggests the Phillies will win more games without him. So carry on about your day as we wait on tonight's showdown at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa against the Yankees.
