CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies are "all over" Tomas, but have competition:
The immediate thought around the game is that Burnett may have changed Philly's fortunes by enhancing its chances to sign a big free agent, and the name everyone's associating with the Phillies is big Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas.
The Phillies are said by people in the know to be “all over” Tomas, the outfielder/third baseman who has been holding private workouts in the Dominican Republic in recent days after a widely-attended September showcase that is said to have drawn all 30 MLB teams. The right-handed Tomas turns 24 next week and is drawing raves, not only from his agent Jay Alou, who predicts a 2015 Rookie of the Year award for him — though a price tag believed to be $100 million, or close to it, may give some teams pause.
Heyman says that the Rangers, Diamondbacks, Giants, Dodgers and Padres have seen him play, but the Mariners will work out Tomas in coming weeks.
Tomas is exactly what the Phillies need: a young, talented player that they might be able to build around. Without a comparable player in the minor league system, the Phillies cannot afford to let Tomas sign with another team. Better yet, a Tomas signing will give Phillies fans something to be excited about in a time where the old way has grown tiresome.
