Wade, 61, was the Phillies' general manager from 1998 to 2005 after having served as the club's assistant GM for three years. He's been largely credited for developing the core players during the Phils' dominance of the NL East in the late 2000s and early 2010s and, of course, for the 2008 World Series Championship.
Under Wade's tenure, the Phillies drafted players like Pat Burrell, Brett Myers, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Cole Hamels. Wade also hired manager Charlie Manuel, who was at the helm of the 2008 squad.
Wade lost his position after the 2005 season, but he wasn't watching from the sidelines. While Pat Gillick shaped the Phillies into the World Series winners they'd become, Wade got a job in Houston. In September 2007, he was named the general manager of the Astros.
In Houston, Wade orchestrated the Roy Oswalt trade with his former club, sending the ace to Philadelphia for a package centered around J. A. Happ.
Wade was fired in November of 2011 but quickly scooped up a special consultant job with the Phils one month later. He worked as the Phillies in a scouting role until his release today.
No word was given on what prompted Wade's dismissal.
