Phillies ride Nola, middle innings to win over Brewers

Final: Phillies 5, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE — The fifth inning of Friday evening's game between the Philadelphia Phillies (8-9) and the Milwaukee Brewers (7-10) included the biggest inning of the Phillies' season on offense — three runs. Coming on a Freddy Galvis RBI triple and a Maikel Franco two-run home run, the rally put the Phillies up 4-1, a lead they would not relinquish.

Right-hander Aaron Nola pitched seven solid innings, while Franco crushed two home runs as the Phillies won the first game of three in Milwaukee, 5-2.

Zach Davies, pitching in the spot of the injured Matt Garza in the Brewers' rotation, took the mound Friday. He spotted the Phillies two runners on base in the first, but the Phils couldn't capitalize. In the bottom of the frame, Milwaukee did take advantage of having runners on first and third after a Scooter Gennett walk and a Ryan Braun single. With one out, Chris Carter singled to right-center to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.

Aaron Nola managed to settle down after the shaky first. He pitched seven innings in all, keeping Milwaukee scoreless from the second to the seventh and allowing just four hits.

The Phillies tied the game in the fourth inning, when Darin Ruf poked a ball through the infield to score Cameron Rupp.

In the fifth, the Phils put up their first crooked number of the year. Odubel Herrera singled and was brought home by Freddy Galvis' triple down the right-field line. Maikel Franco immediately followed up by driving a low curveball into the left-field seats.

Franco extended the Phillies' lead to 5-1 in the seventh against reliever Chris Capuano, crushing a slider to left center field. Besides Franco's blast, Capuano and Blaine Boyer didn't allow any runs in relief of Davies over the last three innings.

The Phillies' bullpen, too, was solid. Hector Neris struck out two batters in the eighth, giving up just one walk.

In the ninth, Jeanmar Gomez ran into a little more trouble. Carter and Aaron Hill both doubled, making it a 5-2 game. Gomez got three straight outs, though, to close out the game for Phillies.

Charlie Morton will take on Chase Anderson Saturday at 7:10 p.m. for the middle game of the series at Miller Park.
