PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Phillies veteran RHP Charlie Morton will miss the remainder of the season, as he will undergo surgery on May 2 to repair a hamstring that he tore while trying to beat out a bunt Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers, according to Todd Zolecki.
Morton, 32, was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Dec. 12 in exchange for minor-league right-hander David Whitehead. He is owed $8 million this season, with a $9.5 million mutual option or $1 million buyout for 2017. Morton was considered to be a stop-gap — similar to the role Aaron Harang and Jerome Williams played last season — while the Phillies' young rotation develops and readies itself for the big league level.
Left-hander Adam Morgan is expected to take Morton's spot in the rotation and make his season debut on Friday, home in opposition of 2014 American League Cy Young Award winner RHP Corey Kluber and the Cleveland Indians.
Morton was 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.327 WHIP ratio in four starts this season. His replacement, Morgan, was 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA in three starts this spring training, allowing just four hits, two walks and two earned runs in nine innings.
