Prior to taking on offseason free agent target Manny Machado for the first time Monday evening at Petco Park, the Philadelphia Phillies announced a slew of roster moves — highlighted by the activation of the recently acquired Jay Bruce to the 25-man roster.
Along with Bruce, southpaw reliever Austin Davis was added — recalled to complement left-hander Jose Alvarez in the bullpen — while Cole Irvin and Nick Williams were optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Davis, 26, has shuffled between Triple-A and the majors frequently this season; in four games with the IronPigs since May 21, Davis has tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just three singles, one double, and three walks while striking out seven batters (.160/.250/.200).
Irvin, 25, allowed a pair of runs in 3 2/3 relief innings behind "opener" Alvarez on Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Overall with the Phillies in 2019, Irvin has gone 2-1 with a 5.48 ERA and 1.266 WHIP over 21 1/3 innings.
Williams, 25, is hitless over his last seven games an 10 plate appearance while striking out eight times. Overall, the three-year veteran outfielder has just 11 hits and two walks, while striking out 24 times, in 73 plate appearances this season.
