MLB.com along with a handful of other sites have the Phillies selecting either Florida's A.J. Puk or high school outfielder Mickey Moniak, but there are still a couple of other players to consider for the team. On Monday, the Phillies hosted Mercer outfielder Kyle Lewis for workouts and sources tell Tommy Stokke of Knuckleball News that the team is still in on the Georgia native while his hometown Atlanta Braves will reportedly pass on him if he drops to the third pick.
Multiple sources confirmed that the Braves have decided that they won’t be taking Lewis at No. 3 overall. Instead it sounds as if it’ll be high school pitcher Ian Anderson or Louisville outfielder Corey Ray, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports.
While No. 3 can be ruled out for Lewis, it’s too early to rule him out for No. 1 to the Philadelphia Phillies. Lewis worked out for the Phillies in Philadelphia on Monday, placing him on their radar after he wasn’t considered a serious option prior. Most mock drafts have high school outfielder Mickey Moniak or Florida pitcher A.J. Puk as the top options for Philly, but sources say the team hasn’t ruled out Lewis.
If Lewis falls even further down, he could land in Oakland or in the 7-8-9 pick range with the Tigers, Marlins and Padres.
The 20-year-old outfielder hit .367 in 54 games this season with Mercer, just one year after hitting .281, starting in just 17 games as a freshman.
Lewis played high school baseball in Snellville, Georgia but went undrafted in 2013. He hit .300 with seven homers and seven doubles in 39 games during Cape League play last summer against some of the best college pitchers using a wood bat.
