PHILADELPHIA — They say that not one baseball game is ever the same, and that surely was the case in the 5-4 series finale victory against second baseman Chase Utley and the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday evening at Citizens Bank Park.
Due to "a weld that had partially separated from a steel bracket that supported the protective netting in front of the right field scoreboard," fans with tickets in sections 104 and 105 were relocated, according to a statement released by Phillies Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Stiles.
"There was no danger of the scoreboard falling but any weld separation is concerning so we secured the portion of the bracket and, as a precaution, relocated people immediately above and below the scoreboard," said Stiles.
Fans were offered comparable seats in nearby sections. Only once did they noticeably enter the roped-off area — to retrieve a home run ball by Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal, ironically off the malfunctioned scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning.
"Our fans were cooperative and we appreciate their understanding," said Stiles.
Stiles said that a small amount of smoke was generated from the motor controlling the netting and that the Phillies had consultants on site inspecting the entire area. Furthermore, he said the Phillies would "take immediate steps with structural engineers" to correct the problem on Friday.
