Roberto "Rubber Toe" Hernandez, a durable piece of both the Phillies rotation and bullpen this season, has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hernandez was a part of the first set of players the Phillies had put on waivers in August. In return, the Phillies, according to Jim Salisbury as well as other reporters, will receive two PTBNL (player(s) to be named later). Hernandez was scheduled to start tonight's ball game.
This season, Hernandez really bounced back well from his rough season with Tampa Bay in 2013. He made 20 starts with the big league club, as well as three relief appearances. While he was among the league leadrs in the National League nearly all season, Hernandez was still a serviceable arm to help the team bridge the gap to the bullpen. While his ERA sat under 4.00 coming into tonight's game, his FIP currently read 4.62. The Phillies gave Hernandez a $3.2 million deal in the offseason.
The team has yet to name a starter for tonight's game. Reports also surfaced in the last few hours that both Cole Hamels and Marlon Byrd were claimed on revocable waivers. While it is not guaranteed either player will be moved, it will be something to keep an eye on.
