Phillies shut out for first time this season in loss to Cardinals

Final: Cardinals 4, Cardinals 1 ❖  Attendance: 41,818

St.Louis, MO — The Phillies offense was unable to capitalize this afternoon as the Cardinals used a three-run seventh inning to pull ahead and secure themselves a 4-0 win.  Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff battled command issues through six plus innings and Jaime Garcia kept Phils bats quiet over seven strong frames, leading St. Louis to the series victory.

The Phillies had two runners on with less than two outs in both the fifth and ninth innings, but failed to get a run across the plate. Today's loss marks the first time this season that the Phillies have been shutout.

The Phillies, looking to rebound from two straight losses, head to Miami for a weekend series with the Marlins beginning Friday night. Vince Velasquez gets the nod for Philadelphia and will be opposed by Wei-Yin Chen of the Marlins.

WP: Jaime Garcia (2-2, 3.05 ERA)  ❖  LP: Jerad Eickhoff (1-3, 4.21 ERA) ❖ SV: Jeanmar Gomez (9)

After a scoreless top of first from the Phillies, the Cardinals struck in the bottom half. Jerad Eickhoff induced a rare 1-6-3 double play after allowing a lead-off double, catching Matt Carpenter off the bag at second, before surrendering a solo home run to Brandon Moss to give St. Louis a 1-0 edge.

The Phillies had an opportunity to score in the fifth. Cameron Rupp registered the teams' first hit of the day, a single, to lead things off. Following a Cesar Hernandez fly out, Tyler Goeddel singled, putting two on with just one out. Unfortunately, Peter Bourjos lined out into a double play ending the threat.

St. Louis tacked on a few in the seventh. Eickhoff walked Yadier Molina and then lost his footing on the mound, which resulted in a balk during the next at bat. Matt Hazelbaker singled, ending Eickhoff's day. Elvis Araujo came in relief, walking the first batter he faced, Jedd Gyorko. Ruben Tejada followed with a sacrifice fly, plating Molina and extending the Cardinal lead to 2-0. The Phillies opted to intentionally walk Matt Holliday and it paid off as Matt Carpenter popped out for the second out of the inning. Colton Murray relieved Araujo to face right-hander Stephen Piscotty, but he hit a 3-2 offering down the third base line for a two-run double to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

David Lough hit a two-out triple in the eighth, but Ryan Howard grounded out to end the inning. In the ninth, Odubel Herrera and Freddy Galvis led off with back-to-back singles, but neither crossed the plate as Trevor Rosenthal closed the door for the save.
