The Philadelphia Phillies made some additions to their minor league depth on Saturday afternoon, per Baseball America, agreeing to deals with pitchers Pedro Beato and Jesse Beal along with outfielder Christian Marrero.
Beato, 30, has 84 games of Major League Baseball experience between the Orioles, Mets, Red Sox and Braves. He's posted a 4.34 ERA in 93.1 innings at the big league level. Last season, he appeared in 65 games with the Orioles' Triple-A affiliate, going 5-5 with a 2.65 ERA, holding opposing batters to a .231 average on the season.
Beal, 26, makes his way back to affiliated baseball after returning from Tommy John surgery in July to play in the CanAm League this past season. Beal appeared in 22 games for the Sussex County Miners, going 2-0 with a 2.58 ERA in 24.1 innings. He struck out 31 and walked eight. Beal spent six seasons in the Orioles minor league system after being drafted in 2008. Over his time with Baltimore in the minors, he posted a 19-18 record to go along with a 4.22 ERA, 261 strikeouts and 88 walks.
Marrero, 30, resigns with the Phillies after being signed as a minor league free agent in December of 2015. Last season with Double-A Reading, Marrero slashed .282/.422/.462. He hit 11 doubles and eight homers while driving in 32 runs and scoring 36 himself. Marrero is known well for his plate discipline, as he walked 46 times last season compared to 36 strikeouts.
