Yesterday, Jon Heyman reported the Phillies inked a minor league deal with 28 year old southpaw Anthony Vasquez. Vasquez was selected in the 18th round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners. In late August of 2011 he made his major league debut and would finish out the season going 1-6 with a 8.90 ERA in seven starts.
In 2012, Vasquez underwent surgery for a ruptured blood vessel in his brain. He would resume pitching for Seattle in the minor leagues and was released after the 2013 season. He spent the 2014 season in the Orioles organization and has spent the winter pitching for Venados de Mazatlán of the Mexican Pacific League where he went 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA over seven starts for the championship club. Monday, he pitched five strong frames of one run ball in a 2-1 win over Cuba in the Caribbean Series.
