Desperate for any bullpen help possible, the Phillies turned to a veteran who has had some success in the major leagues. According to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Mike MacDougal has signed a minor league contract with the Phillies and has been assigned to AAA Lehigh Valley. MacDougal most recently pitched in the major leagues for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.
MacDougal was released from the Reds after struggling at their AAA affiliate. MacDougal has pitched for the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, Washington Nationals, St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers in his career since his MLB debut in 2001. He has served as closer for both the Royals and Nationals and has 71 career saves.
The Iron Pigs' bullpen lost five arms to the Phillies bullpen so far this season, so at the very least, MacDougal will fill one of those slots. With the Phillies pitching so thin, if MacDougal has some success at AAA it is not hard to imagine he could end up pitching in Citizens Bank Park for the big club.
