Phillies sign right-handed reliever David Hernandez

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Philadelphia Phillies have signed right-handed reliever David Hernandez, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

The contract is reportedly a one-year deal worth $3.9 million, with bonuses included for games finished, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. This could imply that Hernandez will be considered as a potential successor to rumored-to-be-traded closer Ken Giles.

Hernandez, 30, was 1-5 with a 4.28 ERA and a 1.307 WHIP ratio last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 33 2/3 innings, he surrendered 33 hits, 16 earned runs, six home runs and 11 walks, while striking out 33 batters.

The six-year veteran has a career 9.0 K/9 ratio over 414 1/3 innings, which next season could improve the Phillies' 7.2 ratio from 2015.

Hernandez missed the first two months of last season recovering from an April 2014 Tommy John surgery.

The Phillies' 40-man roster now stands at 38 players.
