Phillies Spoil Wrigley Field’s 100th Opening Day

After two heartbreaking losses for Phillies against the Rangers in walk off fashion. The Phillies got back on the winning track with a win against the Chicago Cubs. Phillies sent Roberto Hernandez to the hill for his regular season Phillies debut. Hernandez had a very good spring including a five inning, one hit appearance against the Yankees. The Cubs gave the ball to Travis Wood. Wood last season was 9-12 with 3.11 ERA.

THE GAME: After a quiet first inning, the Cubs opened up the scoring in the second. With two outs, Welington Castillo hit a solo shot to left field. 1-0 Cubs

The Cubs were back it in the third. Hernandez allowed a lead off single to Darwin Barney, followed by a sac bunt by Travis Wood to move up the runner. With two outs, Starlin Castro hit a infield single that got away from Chase Utley. 2-0 Cubs

The Phillies got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Marlon Byrd lead off and got on with an error by Luis Valbuena. Ryan Howard followed with a single and Bryd went to first to third. That set up for Domonic Brown to hit an RBI single. 2-1 Cubs.

In the fifth, Phillies continue to score. With one out, Carlos Ruiz hit a single to set up for Chase Utley to come to the plate. Utley would hit his first home run of the season to give the Phillies the lead. 3-2 Phillies

The seventh inning the Phillies continue the scoring. With one out, Ben Revere hit a single. Following another walk by Ruiz, Utley hit an RBI single to plate Revere. 4-2 Phillies

In the eighth, Brown lead with a single. With two outs John Mayberry Jr. came up to pinch hit. Mayberry crushed a ball to left for a two run shot. 6-2

In the ninth the Phillies put the final nail in the coffin. With two outs, Howard walked to bring Brown up to bat. Brown hit a double to score Howard from first. 7-2 Phillies

Other Phillies pitchers to make appearances were Diekman, DeFatus, Bastardo, Hollands and Manship.

IMPACT: Phillies needed a win after two disappointing game against the Rangers. It was also important the to note that the bullpen went 3.2 innings scoreless today after a rough time in Arlington.

UP NEXT: Tomorrow the Phillies continue their series against the Cubs. Phillies will send Cliff Lee to the hill. In Lee's first start, he went five innings and gave up eight runs. The Cubs will give the ball to Jeff Samardzija. Samardzija went seven innings scoreless innings getting the no-decision. Game starts at 2:20 ET PM.
