The Phillies got another quality start from young starter Zach Eflin. Making his seventh Major League start, Eflin went six innings, allowing just three earned runs. With some support from the Phillies offense, Eflin could have won. However, Mets starter Jacob deGrom got in the way as the Phillies fell to the Mets 5-0.
The biggest story from the Phillies loss was the performance of deGrom, who turned in the most dominant performance of his career. The only thing in the way of a deGrom no-hitter was a single off the bat of Phillies starter Eflin. Besides the hit, deGrom allowed just one base runner the whole game, a walk to first baseman Ryan Howard. With that kind of dominance, the Mets did not need to score too many runs.
The Mets got five runs total. Eflin's three runs were scattered. The Mets got one in the second inning on a Juan Lagares RBI triple. Curtis Granderson hit a solo home run in the third inning, and Jose Reyes doubled home deGrom in the fifth inning.
Phillies reliever Andrew Bailey gave up the other two runs. With James Loney already on base after singling with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, shortstop Asdrubel Cabrera homered to give the Mets a 5-0 lead. That was more than enough.
The Phillies now have four games against the Miami Marlins in Philadelphia before heading to Pittsburgh. Aaron Nola will return to the mound after a mental health break.
