Phillies to honor catcher Carlos Ruiz in ‘Chooch Recognition Ceremony’

The Philadelphia Phillies will honor the career accomplishments of catcher Carlos Ruiz this afternoon in the season finale against the Miami Marlins.

The following is from a team press release:

Chooch Recognition Ceremony: Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz, who this season caught the fourth no-hitter of his career (tying a Major League record with former Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek), will be recognized prior to the game. Ruiz caught Cole Hamels’ no-hitter on July 25, plus a combined no-hitter in September 2014, and Roy Halladay’s two no-hitters in 2010. Presenting a gift from the Phillies to Ruiz is 2008 World Series Champion Manager and Senior Advisor to the General Manager Charlie Manuel.

Roy Halladay, who threw two no-hitters to Ruiz, took to Twitter Sunday to congratulate his former teammate.

Ruiz is signed through next season at $8.5 million. He has a 2017 team option worth $4.5 million, with a $500K buyout.

This season, the 2012 National League All-Star is batting just .211/.290/.285 with two home runs and 22 runs-batted-in over 86 games and 320 plate appearances. He is not in today's starting lineup.

There is speculation that Ruiz may retire this offseason, thus explaining the Phillies' sudden choice to honor the 2008 World Series champion this afternoon.
