Jim Thome, a 22-year veteran, five-time All-Star, 1996 Silver Slugger Award winner and 2018 National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, will be honored by the Philadelphia Phillies before their Thursday, June 14, matinee game against the Colorado Rockies at Citizens Bank Park.
The ceremony will take place exactly 14 years after Thome's iconic 400th career home run. Thome is the only player in big league history to hit his 300th (Cleveland Indians), 400th (Phillies), 500th (Chicago White Sox) and 600th (Minnesota Twins) home runs with different teams, according to the MLB.com press release.
Just like the night of his 400th home run, Thome's wife, Andrea, and daughter, Lila, will be in attendance, as well as his son, Landon. Lila Thome will perform the National Anthem.
Thome's charisma and team-oriented work ethic meant just as much as his slugging capabilities to the Phillies during his three-plus seasons spent with the club from 2003-2005 and 2012. As the club transitioned from Veterans Stadium to Citizens Bank Park in 2004, Thome marked a new era for the franchise which had not generated much enthusiasm since its appearance in the 1993 World Series.
"Jim's signing ushered in a new era of Phillies baseball," Executive Vice President David Buck said. "He had an immediate connection with our fanbase and gave our franchise a renewed level of respectability. Jim's election to the Hall of Fame was always a matter of 'when' not 'if' and we are excited to be able to honor him for that historic achievement."
The 47-year-old was inducted into the club's Wall of Fame in 2016. The 2018 Cooperstown ceremony will take place during Hall of Fame Weekend, July 27-30.
In 391 games as a Phillie, Thome hit .260/.384/.541 with 101 home runs and 281 RBI.
