We don't really want to, do we? I guess we have to…
Chipper Jones continues his farewell tour to Major League Baseball tonight with his last stop in Philadelphia as the Phillies take on the Braves. According to the Inquirer's Matt Gelb, the Phillies will honor Chipper Jones prior to tonight's series opener at Citizens Bank Park:
The Phillies will present Atlanta's Chipper Jones with a gift prior to Friday's series opener against the Braves. Jones is retiring at season's end and has been honored at most visiting ballparks. Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley are expected to take part in the ceremony.
Honoring Jones is the right thing to do, even though we don't like it. Many teams around baseball have honored Jones this season with gifts as he heads into retirement after 20 seasons. Most recently, the Marlins this week gave Jones a fishing reel and accessories.
The Phillies cannot be the only one not to honor him after he has continually killed the Phillies over the years, such as this walkoff home run that was a demoralizing loss for the Phillies on September 2nd.
I say that fans tonight should give Chipper Jones a polite golf clap and let him go away forever.
