If there would have been voting on Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame candidates this year, the late Roy Halladay would have run away with the voting. So the Phillies aren't going to have voting this year, as they will instead induct Halladay and former general manager Pat Gillick onto the team's Wall of Fame.
Play-by-play announcer Tom McCarthy noted on this afternoon's telecast the Phillies will induct the duo onto the Wall of Fame on Aug. 4, when the team hosts the Miami Marlins:
“He will be in great company with other Phillies legends who are on the Wall of Fame," Brandy Halladay, the widow of Roy, told Dan Gelston of the Associated Press. "The decision made by the Phillies to induct Roy without a fan vote makes it even more meaningful."
Halladay spent the final four seasons of his major league career with the Phillies, winning 40 games in his first two years with the club, while posting a league-leading 17 complete games over that time and winning the 2010 National League Cy Young Award. He will become eligible for Hall of Fame voting for the first time in 2019.
In addition to inducting Halladay into the team's Wall of Fame, Gelston also noted that the team plans to fly a No. 34 flag at Citizens Bank Park this season. Catcher Andrew Knapp, who wore No. 34 in his rookie season of 2017, mutually agreed with the Phillies to switch numbers in 2018, as he will instead where No. 15 this season.
Gillick, already a Hall of Famer, was the Phillies general manager from 2006-2008, laying the groundwork for the greatest five-year run in franchise history. The Phillies won the National League East title in Gillick's final two seasons as general manager, and then won the World Series in 2008. Under Gillick's assistant, Ruben Amaro Jr., who eventually succeeded him, the Phillies won three more National League East titles and the 2009 National League pennant.
From August 2014 until the conclusion of the 2015 season, Gillick served as the Phillies interim president, before overseeing the hire of Andy MacPhail, the team's current president. Gillick, 80, is currently a senior advisor to MacPhail and general manager Matt Klentak.
The Phillies will place two new honorees on their Wall of Fame this year, after not adding a new member in 2017. MLB all-time hits king Pete Rose was voted onto the Wall of Fame by Phillies fans in 2017, but the club ultimately cancelled his induction when court documents became public suggesting that a woman had accused Rose of having a sexual relationship with her prior to her 16th birthday in the 1970s.
