One of the Atlanta Braves' many recent losses will turn into a gain for the Philadelphia Phillies.
According to Ben Badler of Baseball America, Abrahan Gutierrez, one of the prospects that the Braves were forced to surrender as part of the fallout from their international signing scandal, has signed with the Phillies. Badler says that that the Phillies have signed the catching prospect for $550,000, which will come out of their 2017-18 international signing pool.
The Venezuelan native is just 18, and had limited experience playing in the Braves system. In 129 at-bats for the GCL Braves in 2017, Gutierrez slashed .264/.319/.357 with a .676 OPS, 10 walks and 21 strikeouts. Braves website Talking Chop ranked him as the organization's 26th best prospect in their midseason organizational rankings this past season, saying that he "had the chance to become a special catching prospect."
Gutierrez became a free-agent late in November, following a lengthy MLB investigation into how the Braves handled international signings. The league determined that the Braves had illegally used money outside of their international signing pool to sign international prospects. That determination led to former general manager John Coppolella receiving a lifetime ban from the sport, and 12 prospects, including Gutierrez, being declared free-agents.
