Brian Wilson helped the San Francisco Giants beat the Phillies in the 2010 NLCS en route to a World Series Championship. But Wilson has fallen since then, succumbing to a second Tommy John surgery in April 2012. Wilson is now on the comeback trail and looking for a new team. The Phillies are one of the teams who will check out whether or not Wilson can help them, according to Phillies.com's Todd Zolecki.
The Phillies are reportedly looking to add to increase their chances of a postseason berth, Zolecki reports:
…they still believe they have a chance to make the postseason, which is why they will watch free agent relief pitcher Brian Wilson throw Thursday in Los Angeles. Wilson is 15 months removed from Tommy John surgery. He threw Monday for the Giants, but Thursday’s session is expected to include numerous teams looking for bullpen help.
Or perhaps Jonathan Papelbon is traded and Wilson helps fill the gap as closer while the Phillies develop other long-term plans. We shall see. In a bullpen that features Luis Garcia, J.C. Ramirez, and Raul Valdes, it cannot hurt.
Wilson is 31 years old and has pitched exclusively for the San Francisco Giants in his Major League career. From 2006 – 2012 Wilson has a 3.21 ERA and 171 saves in 196 opportunities. The Giants declined to offer Wilson a contract after 2012 after Sergio Romo emerged as the Giants' closer en route to a second World Series championship in three seasons.
