Just one day after being named as the Eastern League Player of the Week, Phillies top prospect Jorge Alfaro is headed to the seven-day disabled list with an oblique injury. Alfaro had been handling primary catching duties with Double-A Reading.

With an injury like an oblique strain, it is difficult to predict how much time he'll miss. Cody Asche has been dealing with an oblique injury all season, something that's kept him from playing in a game yet, including Spring Training. Last season, Darin Ruf suffered a strained oblique and was out for 4-6 weeks.
It's a big blow for the Phillies catching prospect, who had been on a tear offensively to start the 2016 season. Through eight games, he is hitting .500 (18-for-36) with four doubles, a triple, a home run, 10 RBIs and seven runs scored. Alfaro leads the Eastern League in batting average (.500) and hits (18) and he's 2nd in RBI (10), doubles (4) and OBP (.526). He's also tied for third in total bases with 27.
The Double-A backstop is ranked as the 6th best prospect in the Phillies organization, according to MLB Pipeline, and comes in at 94th in the Top 100 prospect rankings. During Reading's weekend series in Harrisburg, Alfaro went 7-for-13 with a double, a triple, a home run, five RBI's and two runs scored.
Veteran catcher Logan Moore will take over for Alfaro for now. It is unknown whether a roster move will be made to add another catcher to the Double-A team at this time.
