Phillies unable to overcome three-run sixth, strike out 16 times in loss to Mets

The Phillies managed to get a lead against another young Mets starter in 22-year-old Noah Syndergaard tonight. Unfortunately, the Phillies bullpen couldn't hold on to a one-run edge in the sixth, allowing the Mets to take a lead they wouldn't give up. Jerome Williams started for the Phillies and looked pretty good, but ran into trouble in the sixth. Jeanmar Gomez came in to relieve Williams and issued two walks and a single to give the Mets a two-run advantage. Meanwhile, both Freddy Galvis and Ryan Howard hit two-run home runs to give the Phillies a 4-3 lead while Elvis Araujo continue his strong pitching out of the bullpen in the losing effort.

The high-powered Mets offense picked up right where they left off against Jerome Williams in the first innings. A Ryan Howard error allowed Curtis Granderson to reach first. Yoenis Cespedes followed with a two-run homer to center field to make it 2-0. In the third, Travis d'Arnaud hit a two-out single and was driven in by a Noah Syndergaard RBI-double. Just like that, it was 3-0 Mets.

In the bottom half of the third, Carlos Ruiz led things off with a double to left center field. Jerome Williams was unable to get a bunt down and Cesar Hernandez struck out. With two down and Ruiz still standing on second, Freddy Galvis smacked a line drive home run to right center off of a 97 mph fastball. That shot brought the Phillies to within one, 3-2. They weren't done though. Odubel Herrera reached first thanks to an error at first by Kelly Johnson. Ryan Howard made him pay with a two-run home run to left center to give the Phils a 4-3 advantage.

In the sixth, the Mets would pull ahead. Kelly Johnson singled with one out, ending Jerome Williams' day. Jeanmar Gomez relieved him and got the first out before issuing walks to both Michael Conforto and Travis d'Arnaud, to score a run and tie the game at four a piece. Michael Cuddyer laced a pinch-hit two-RBI single to center and give New York the lead back, 6-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Phillies got runners on the corners, thanks to singles by both Andres Blanco and Domonic Brown. Carlos Ruiz slapped an RBI-groundout to third, scoring Blanco, cutting the lead to 6-5.

Phillies coach Larry Bowa was ejected in the seventh after getting angry at Mets pitcher Hansel Robles for quick pitching Darin Ruf. Bowa and the home plate umpire had been jawing for a few innings prior.

Andres Blanco singled and Cody Asche walked with one out in the eighth, putting runners on first and second for Domonic Brown. He struck out on a high changeup and Carlos Ruiz grounded out to end the inning against Mets closer, Jeurys Familia. The Phils couldn't get anything going in the final frame as both Aaron Altherr and Cesar Hernandez struck out and Freddy Galvis grounded out to end the game.

The Phillies have now lost seven straight games against the Mets and 21 of their last 26. Cesar Hernandez has been given a lot of praise in his play at second base this season, but he has just one hit in his last 21 at-bats and five in his last 31. On August 12, his average sat at .289, but since then, it has sunk to .266.
