Detroit, MI – Following a two-game stretch that saw the Phillies score nine runs on 25 hits, Tigers ace Justin Verlander put on a dominant performance, leading Detroit to a 3-1  win tonight at Comerica Park. The former Most Valuable Player and AL Cy Young winner in 2011 scattered just three hits over eight shutout innings, striking out 10.

Miguel Cabrera spear-headed the Tigers offense once again, driving in two of their three runs in the win. Cameron Maybin hit lead-off for Detroit, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

For the Phillies, Tommy Joseph went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Freddy Galvis hit two doubles and scored a run. Starter Jeremy Hellickson tossed seven innings of three-run ball, the third straight start that he's allowed three runs or less. In each of those outings, he's also lasted at least six innings.

The Phillies and Tigers conclude their series on Wednesday afternoon in Detroit. Aaron Nola goes for the Phils and Anibal Sanchez takes the mound for the Tigers.
