Phillies Hot Stove: Machado Deal With Dodgers Reportedly Hits Snag

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

Superstar shortstop Manny Machado was all but thought to head to the Los Angeles Dodgers after donning a Baltimore Orioles uniform for the final time in Tuesday evening's 8-6 American League All-Star victory at the 89th Midsummer Classic in Washington, D.C.

As it turns out, the deal has hit a snag, and is far from official.

According to MLB Network Radio host Steve Phillips, there is a "possible snag" in the deal surrounding the four-time All-Star, with "one or more of the prospects" being sent to the Orioles having "some issues in their physicals." Likewise, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick says he has heard "nothing" on Wednesday to indicate the Machado trade is "steaming toward the finish line."

UPDATE, 6:22 p.m. – Roch Kubatko, MASN: "Looks like the Machado trade to the #dodgers will go through. #orioles getting back 5 players. Told just some "final points to review" and that medical concerns have been "all but addressed." Not a deal-breaker. So stay tuned."

UPDATE, 9:10 pm. – Trade Official: Dodgers acquire SS Manny Machado from the Orioles for OF Yusniel Diaz, RHP Zach Pop, RHP Dean Kremer, 3B Rylan Bannon, and INF Breyvic Valera.

CBS Sports' R.J. Anderson writes:

In the past, the Orioles have walked away from deals with Grant BalfourAngel Pagan, and Tyler Colvin; they've restructured Yovani Gallardo's contract; and they've rejected a trade that would have sent Zach Britton to the Houston Astros. (Those are just some of the stories.) It's hard to blame the Orioles — why employ the doctors if you don't trust their evaluation? — but Baltimore, more so than any other organization, has the reputation for being stingy in this arena.

Phillips served as the general manager of the New York Mets from 1997-2003, and preceded Orioles Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Dan Duquette's cousin, Jim, who served in the role for the 2004 season. Jim was an assistant under Phillips prior to his promotion, while Dan served as the Boston Red Sox' general manager from 1994-2002.
