The Phillies proved stronger than their Keystone rival Pittsburgh Pirates in yesterday's game, as the Phillies pulled out a 5-0 win. John Lannan pitched superb in his second start of the spring. The left-hander tossed three innings of one-hit ball against the Pirtates while striking out two. With that win, the Phillies pulled to .500 (5-5) in Grapefruit League games.
Today, the Phillies will take a break from their Grapefruit activities as they will host the Dominican Republic in an exhibition match. Cole Hamels will make his third start of the spring as he takes on the DR, who will play their first World Baseball Classic game on Thursday against Venezuela. Hamels allowed a run on four hits over three innings of work last Thursday against the Braves. Hamels got the winning decision, his first of the spring.
Samuel Deduno will get the start for the DR this afternoon. Deduno, who has played for the Rockies, Padres and now the Minnesota Twins at MLB level, made a previous appearance this Spring last Monday against the Pirates. He tossed one inning, allowing a hit while hitting a batter.
