Pirates Lose Out on Neshek, Now Pursuing Bastardo

A pair of relievers signing with the Astros this morning may have upped the market for Phillies reliever, Antonio Bastardo. According to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, the Pirates are now purusing him.

The Pirates interest in the Phils left-hander dveloped after Pat Neshek signed with Houston after he was extremely close to agreeing to a deal with Pittsburgh.

Over the last four seasons out of the bullpen for the Phillies, Bastardo has posted a 3.36 ERA with a strikeout to walk rate of 2.61. This past season, he appeared in 67 games for Philadelphia, posting a 3.94 ERA in 64 innings of work. He struck out 81 and walked 34. It is still unclear who interests the Phillies from the Pirates organization in a Bastardo deal.

Yesterday, reports came up revealing the Boston Red Sox and their interest in Bastardo. Sources said the Phillies were looking at Red Sox prospect, Sean Coyle.
