The logic behind the Eagles 39-17 win over the Saints on Sunday is simple.
When your quarterback passes for 333 yards and completes 32 of 45 passes, when your running backs combine for 180 yards on the ground, when your defense forces four turnovers, chances are you will win and win big.
The Eagles finally got the performance that lived up to the potential of the offense, balancing the running game and the passing game to dismantle the Saints defense.
It leaves the Eagles in a position to build off of this game, with the division still in reach and a huge divisional game coming up next week.
Perhaps the most encouraging thing about this game was an improved performance by the offensive line that allowed the balance on offense. It led to the best week the running backs have had all season. It was also Sam Bradford's best game.
Defensively, one week after getting almost no pressure on the quarterback, Drew Brees was under pressure and uncomfortable for the entire game.
Forcing four turnovers helps as well.
The Eagles were on the wrong end of the turnover game in the first half. They left points on the field with Bradford's two interceptions in the first half. The second half was a different story. The Eagles protected the ball offensively and took it away defensively. The Saints only solid drives of the second half were their first — a short field goal that tied the score — and their last — a garbage-time touchdown drive.
It sets the Eagles up for a crucial Week 6 game against the Giants on Monday night where first place in the NFC East could be on the line.
For a team that has been looking for rhythm and consistency all season long, they finally turned in a game that shows some potential. It is a game that the Eagles can build on in their effort to be more consistent and live up to the potential they showed in the preseason.
Sunday's win was the first time the offense showed what can happen if there is that balance between the run and the pass and when the defense can actually get off the field. There may have been some bumps in the road getting there, but ultimately, it proved to be the best showing from the Eagles all season.
That is certainly a step in the right direction. But it doesn't stop any of the upcoming games from being must-wins from here.
