In the end, the result is meaningless, but there was an air of disappointment in the Flyers falling in Wednesday's Rookie Game against the Islanders by a score of 4-3.

That said, the game also served its purpose. It was a showcase of the Flyers future to 13,000 fans.

Rather than break down individual aspects of the game in the Postgame Points, as I'd typically do for a regular-season game, for this game, here are points on 10 players.

  1. Nolan Patrick – Obviously the guy everyone came to see, right? Patrick didn't disappoint either.

He didn't register on the scoresheet or put the focus on offense nearly as much, but you can see the things that make him such a highly-regarded player. His positioning is excellent. He cares a great deal about his two-way game and it shows. He nearly won the game in overtime with a shot that caught iron. He set up a couple chances as well. Just the way he holds the puck on a power play makes him look dangerous. He is a bit pass happy, but that may change with time and opportunity.

For a kid playing in his first game since March, he got a hero's welcome at Wells Fargo Center and provided just a small glimpse of what may be to come as soon as the weekend in the preseason.

  2. Sam Morin – If you want physical play, you got it. Morin was nothing short of a human wrecking ball on the ice. He carries a style of play that Flyer fans embrace.

But I was more impressed with the way Morin carried himself as one of the rookie camp "vets." He looked poised, played a solid defensive game and certainly showed that the experience of playing in the AHL over the past few years could go a long way.

  3. Carter Hart – The star of the third period in my eyes. After entering the game midway through the second, Hart faced a barrage of shots in the third, at one time stopping all 13 the Islanders had taken in the period.

Of course, from there, the Islanders scored two late goals in the third and tallied in overtime to win the game, but none of the goals were really on Hart.

What was more impressive was Hart's ability to track the puck, particularly through traffic, and how solid he is when the puck is in the crease. Hard to believe this kid is 19 and may be the brightest of the bunch among netminders. The Flyers have a keeper here.

  4. Travis Sanheim – It was a bit of an up-and-down game for Sanheim.

From an offensive standpoint, he's the real deal. Sanheim's a smooth skater, but was also very active on the offensive side, scoring a goal and pinching quite a bit during the game.

That said, he didn't look nearly as strong in the defensive zone and went to the box three times — once on matching roughing minors, where the Flyers received a power play for an extra two on the Islanders. It's only the first of several appearances for Sanheim, but if this becomes consistent, don't be surprised if another year of seasoning is in store at the AHL level.

  5. Oskar Lindblom – Lindblom is the other hyped forward, but his line — with German Rubtsov and Pascal Laberge — didn't generate much or really stand out. Now, it's unfair to evaluate anything from this game, especially after many of these kids just took the ice as a group for only the past two days.

But that said, Lindblom's got high expectations and had the look of a player in an offensive drought, almost trying to do too much every time the puck came near him.

There's a lot of practice and preseason to go, so the forward just getting his start on North American soil still has time to prove if he is NHL ready.

  6. Philippe Myers – Myers preseason took a small hit with him leaving the game with a lower-body injury. That's not good for his prospects to make the team, though they weren't as good as other defensemen on the training camp roster.

Myers had the look of a player that could use the AHL experience to better himself as a pro. There's a ton to like about his game, but he didn't shine like he has in the past or does in camp drills. Of course, it's hard to say how long the injury truly bothered him as the game wore on, so he could have been ailing and that certainly would change things in any evaluation.

  7. Ivan Kosorenkov – This kid has wheels. Every time Kosorenkov touched the puck, he was off to the races with great speed. He put together a real nice shift late in the first that set up Travis Sanheim's goal as well.

Kosorenkov is a work in progress for sure, but it would be shocking if he didn't get a contract out of camp to at least stay within the organization. He's got a future for sure.

  8. Mikhail Vorobyev – I really can't wait to see what kind of numbers Vorobyev can put up with the Phantoms. He's bound to be among the leaders in assists, given his excellent vision. He had two assists and was truly a standout in the game. Between Lindblom and Vorobyev, the Flyers may have found a couple of diamonds in the rough later in the draft.
  9. Mark Friedman – Knowing that Friedman wasn't part of the NHL conversation, I was still curious to see what he brought to a game. His first impression was a strong one.

Aside from Sanheim, Friedman displayed the best skating ability among the defensemen and he was in the perfect place for Vorobyev to set him up for a one-timer and a goal.

This is definitely a player I'd like to see have a big role in the AHL and it wouldn't be shocking as time goes on to see him be among the top options if the Flyers need to call up a defenseman.

  10. Connor Bunnaman – Bunnaman's got some good scoring chops in juniors, so it wasn't a surprise to see him drive the net and active in the offensive zone.

Bunnaman nearly won the game three times in a matter of seconds in overtime. His first chance on a breakaway was disrupted and with a delayed penalty call, he was robbed of a goal by Mitch Gillam on a follow-up chance. He got a penalty shot out of it as well, but was stopped on a rather easy attempt for Gillam.

But the potential is there and as he will likely head back to juniors this season, look for a big year for Bunnaman.
