2014: (6-14, 4.37 ERA)

Slowey, 30, signed a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training with the Phillies on December 22, 2014. The following is an excerpt from our article that announced his signing:

Pittsburgh-native Kevin Slowey is best-known for his years spent with the Minnesota Twins (2007-2011). In 2010, he posted a 13-6 record with a 4.45 ERA in 28 games started. Following the 2011 season, Slowey was traded to the Colorado Rockies. 45 days later, he was traded to the Cleveland Indians because of the Rockies' surplus in pitching. Slowey never threw for the Indians in 2012, spending the entire season on the disabled list. With the Marlins (2013-2014), Slowey went 4-7 with a 4.45 ERA in 16 games started. He was released on June 24, 2014.

Similar to Slowey, 25-year-old right hander Nathan Eovaldi too will be debuting with his new team this afternoon. Drafted by the Dodgers in 2008, Eovaldi was sent to Miami at the 2012 trade deadline, which brought Hanley Ramirez to Los Angeles. He was acquired this offseason by the Yankees, along with Garrett Jones, as a part of the trade that sent long-time Atlanta Brave, Martin Prado, to the Marlins.

In his career, Eovaldi is 15-35 with a 4.07 ERA over 460.0 innings of work. He has never been able to have a win-loss percentage over .500, going 1-2 in 2011, 4-13 in 2012, 4-6 in 2013 and 6-14 last season.

According to Meghan Montemurro, Phillies beat writer for The News Journal, Ethan Martin, Paul Clemens (NRI), Justin De Fratus and Hector Neris are all expected to make an appearance out of the bullpen in today's game.

What to Watch For:

  • Yesterday, Ryan Howard went 2-2 with a RBI-single. In today's rematch, can Howard continue to impress? In his career against Yankees' starter Nathan Eovaldi, the "Big Piece" is 4-15 with one home run, a double and three runs-batted-in.
  • Alex Rodriguez returns after a 17-month absence from the game. He is batting second today in the designated hitter position. The 39-year-old was suspended for the entirety of the 2014 season for violating Major League Baseball's Performance Enhancing Drugs policy.
  • Top-Phillies' prospect Maikel Franco makes his first start of Spring Training. While he is expected to start the season in the minors, a surprising Spring showing could earn him a spot on the Opening Day roster.
