The Flyers loss in Chicago featured a period where they allowed 17 shots and three goals. The Flyers nearly repeated that on Saturday.
In the second period, the Flyers were on their heels, allowing the first 11 shots of the period to the Red Wings. But they didn't allow a goal. Instead, they scored the equalizer and three more in the third to take a 4-2 win over the Red Wings at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night.
The Flyers and Red Wings played a fairly even first period. But Detroit would strike first with a late goal.
At 15:33, a great pass from Andrej Nestrasil went across the goalmouth to Riley Sheahan who scored to put Detroit on top.
In the second, the Flyers were being badly out-played by the Red Wings. The Flyers didn't record a shot in the period until there were less than seven minutes to play as the Red Wings opened up the shot advantage to 22-5.
But one of the Flyers remaining three shots in the period went in as Chris VandeVelde set up Nick Grossmann for a tip in front to beat Jonas Gustavsson and tie the game at 18:21 of the second.
The Flyers quickly took the lead in the third as Michael Raffl scored on a backhand after receiving a nice lead pass from Jake Voracek at 6:01.
But the Red Wings got the goal back in similar fashion as a defensive breakdown left Pavel Datsyuk alone in front to even the score just 42 seconds later.
Midway through the third, the Flyers got a power play and took advantage, as Brayden Schenn deflected a shot past Gustavsson for the first power-play goal allowed by Detroit this season. It was Schenn's second goal of the second in his 200th career NHL game.
From there, the defense and Ray Emery kept the Flyers lead intact. In the final minute of the game, the Flyers iced the game with an empty-net goal by Raffl, his second of the game.
Emery made 35 saves in the win. Voracek had two assists. In his NHL debut, Shayne Gostisbehere was a minus-one.
The Flyers improved to 3-3-2 on the season with the win. They continue their tough stretch of October games on Tuesday night when they face the Los Angeles Kings at 7 p.m.
