After losing 10 straight games, the Flyers have won three straight games. On the offensive side, each one of those games has had a constant.
Michael Raffl has scored the game-winning goal.
There’s no doubt the Flyers hottest offensive player is Raffl, who is suddenly up to seven points, including five goals, on the season, all in the last eight games after going the first 21 games of the season without a point.
Without question, the biggest beneficiary of the Flyers recent shuffle in lines is Raffl.
Raffl’s little three-game goal streak has come with the assistance of Jake Voracek. Raffl spent most of the first quarter of the season on a line with Scott Laughton and Taylor Leier. The line was effective, but didn’t produce much in terms of points.
But when Dave Hakstol switched up the lines as the Flyers lines, including breaking up the top line of Voracek, Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier, it opened the door for an increase in secondary scoring.
Voracek has assisted on each of Raffl’s three game-winning goals. Raffl’s five goals since Nov. 22 not only helped him pick up his first points this season, but his first goal since Jan. 7. There were 42 games between goals for Raffl.
The improvement goes beyond the scoring. By simply being on Voracek’s line, chances have opened up for both Raffl and fellow linemate Valtteri Filppula. In the last three games, the line has combined for 23 shots on goal.
The Flyers mixed the lines because really, enough was enough. Things were stagnant and while the top line was still producing, they were essentially carrying the offense. In the last three games, the trio of Giroux, Couturier and Voracek have just one goal between them. They’ve been plenty involved in the action though, with 10 assists between them in the last three games.
But at the forefront of the secondary scoring, you’ll find Raffl, who has certainly brought his game to another level lately.
It’s not like this chemistry with Voracek is something new. The two played on the Flyers top line in years past, so there is some familiarity to the duo.
That said, Raffl was off to an impressive start this season without the points, helping provide an energy to the fourth line that was lacking in the past few seasons. It’s an even bigger credit to Hakstol that in a situation where the lines needed to be changed, he took a player with no points and gave him the promotion on merit and strong play.
The move has served as a reminder that Raffl could be a big secondary contributor for the Flyers. He was close several times as part of the fourth line.
But now with his new line, the production has followed, one game-winner at a time.
