Just over a week after his release from the Phillies, catcher Cameron Rupp has a new major-league team — in his home state.
The native Texan has signed a minor-league contract with the Texas Rangers, the club announced Tuesday afternoon. Rupp has been assigned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Rupp, 29, found himself the odd man out of the Phillies' backstop rotation for the 2018 season. Behind Jorge Alfaro and Andrew Knapp on the depth chart, Rupp was designated for assignment March 25 and released the next day.
A lack of plate discipline and subpar defense were principal reasons for Rupp's release from Philadelphia. He hit .217/.299/.417 in 2017, his fifth season in MLB and all with the Phillies. Rupp owned a career batting line of .234/.298/.407 and hit 39 career home runs.
Rupp fits in behind Texas starting catcher Robinson Chirinos and backup Juan Centeno, a former Houston Astro. With injuries to either, Rupp will find himself back in the big leagues.
