Reading tops Binghamton behind Jake Thompson’s three-hit shutout

The Reading Fightin Phils and Binghamton Mets resumed their best-of-five Eastern League Division Series after a rainout on Thursday night. Taking the mound for Reading was top prospect Jake Thompson and he was dominant, as he has been since joining the Phillies organization, tossing a three-hit shutout en route to a 3-0 Reading win. The Fightin Phils lead the series 2-0 and games now shift to Reading, starting tonight at 7:05.

Thompson entered the game with a 5-1 record to go along with a 1.80 ERA in his time with Double-A Reading. He kept rolling on Friday, holding the B-Mets to just three hits while striking out eight and walking one. Thompson threw 108 pitches, 66 of them for strikes.

Offensively, Reading was led by outfielders Nick Williams and Cam Perkins. Out of the lead-off spot, Williams went 2-for-6 with a home run, a run scored and an RBI. Meanwhile, Perkins collected three hits, including an RBI-double. He finished with two RBI's on the night.

The Fightin Phils got on the board in the second. First baseman Brock Stassi doubled to lead things off. Cam Perkins followed with a single to drive in Stassi, making it 1-0.

In the third, J.P. Crawford hit a one-out single and Andrew Knapp walked to put two runners on base. Two batters later, Cam Perkins singled to center field, plating Crawford to make it a 2-0 game.

Reading scored their final run in the sixth, courtesy of a two-out solo home run from Nick Williams.

B-Mets starter Robert Gsellman lasted 4 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on nine hits.

The Fightin Phils will go for the sweep tonight at home, First Energy Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05. Ben Lively (8-7, 4.13) will get the start for Reading.
