On a gloomy Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia the Eagles – and Carson Wentz – shined bright in a 34-7 rout of the Arizona Cardinals at Lincoln Financial Field.
After the Cardinals were forced to punt on their first drive the Eagles went to work immediately following a great return from Kenjon Barner that placed the Eagles around midfield.
Wentz drove the Eagles straight down the field connecting with four different receivers on the short field. Wentz would throw a beautiful ball to Trey Burton for a 15-yard touchdown.
The Eagles defense would force another punt, and Kenjon Barner would strike again. Barner provided another electric return and had one man left to beat before being stopped around the Arizona 30-yard line.
Wentz would take no time at all to capitalize on the great field position, finding Zach Ertz for an 11-yard touchdown.
Wentz would not be done there.
On the next drive Torrey Smith beat his man over the top and Wentz would hit him with a bullet in stride deep down the field. Smith would run the rest of the way for a 59-yard touchdown and a 21-0 Eagles lead. Wentz went 7/9 with 121 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter.
The Cardinals would finally get on the board with a steady drive in the second quarter. Carson Palmer would connect with John Brown on 13-yard slant to the end zone.
The Eagles were threatening again late in the second quarter when Wentz – who was phenomenal in the first half – suddenly became erratic. Wentz under threw Torrey Smith and Patrick Peterson nearly picked it off. On the very next play Wentz overthrew Zach Ertz in the end zone and this time Antoine Bethea did come up with the interception. It was Wentz's first interception in 91 pass attempts, and first since the game in week two against Kansas City.
Carson Palmer would get the Cardinals into the outskirts of Phil Dawson's field goal range after completing passes to Larry Fitzgerald and J.J. Nelson. The 42-year old Dawson would have his kick blocked by Patrick Robinson, bailing out Wentz for the late interception.
The Eagles took a 21-7 lead into halftime.
The Eagles put a good drive together to open the second half. Wentz spread the ball around and LeGarrette Blount picked up tough yards along the way. With the Eagles threatening in Arizona territory Wentz missed Zach Ertz on 3rd & 5 and the Eagles had to settle for a 36-yard Jake Elliott field goal.
On the Eagles next drive they would only need Elliott for the extra point.
Penalties and missed passes had the Eagles in rough shape but on 3rd & 19 Wentz unloaded a bomb to Nelson Agholor, who stretched his arms out to pluck the ball out of the air and then juked his way around Buddha Baker for a 72-yard touchdown. Jake Elliott would tack on the extra point and the Eagles would lead 31-7 midway through the third quarter.

Like last week in Los Angeles, the Eagles would lean on the running game in the final quarter. The Eagles killed over six and a half minutes to seal the win against the Chargers and this week the Eagles killed nine minutes and 14 seconds of the clock with a masterful drive.
The drive concluded with a 28-yard field goal from Jake Elliott. Elliott has made eight consecutive field goals since missing his first attempt of week three.
The Eagles almost surrendered a touchdown in garbage time as J.J. Nelson broke loose, but as he stretched for the goal line Rodney McLeod hit him and jarred the ball loose for a fumble and touchback that gave the Eagles possession. The Eagles would kneel to end the game.
The Eagles won by a score of 34-7 on a day where the team dominated in all three phases.
Carson Wentz had a career-high four passing touchdowns with 304 yards through the air. Wentz also had 13 yards on the ground. Wentz connected with eight different receivers on the day.
LeGarrette Blount led the Eagles in rushing with 74 yards on 14 carries. Kenjon Barner added 23 yards on five carries. The Cardinals ran for 35 yards on 14 carries as a team.
Andre Ellington of the Cardinals led all players with nine receptions. Zach Ertz paced the Eagles with six receptions. Nelson Agholor led all players with a career-high 93 yards.
The Eagles were 9-for-14 on third down. Wentz threw three of his touchdowns on third down including the 59-yarder to Smith and the 72-yarder to Nelson Agholor.
No matter what happens with the Dallas Cowboys today, the Eagles will remain alone atop the NFC East at 4-1.
The Eagles will play again this Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers, who are also 4-1.
