Pat Gillick will be stepping down as Phillies President at the conclusion of the 2015 season. While Gillick has served as a special advisor for the Phillies since the conclusion of his contract as general manager, it is not yet known whether he will remain in the Phillies organization after the season. If Gillick does not stick around, another team may want to add Gillick to their staff.
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes that Red Sox insider Peter Gammons believes the Red Sox could be asking about Gillick, even after adding former Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto as a consultant.
Dipoto’s hiring was first reported by Peter Gammons on MLB Network. Gammons also said the Red Sox are trying to lure Hall of Fame executive Pat Gillick to become a senior adviser to Cherington.
Gillick had been the Phillies’ president during the recent rebuilding process, but he is stepping down after the season as when Andy MacPhail will take Gillick’s spot.
The Red Sox had not yet sought permission to speak to Gillick as MacPhail knew nothing about the Red Sox’ intention to pursue him.
The Red Sox need some help.
Since the Red Sox had their 2013 victory, the team has gone from bad to worse. Expected to be a perennial contender, the Red Sox now need a new vision after what will be a second losing season in a row. President and CEO Larry Luchino is stepping down at year's end and the ballclub needs a new direction. While Sam Kennedy is expected to perform the financial responsibilities of a president, the Red Sox are expected to add a baseball mind. Dipoto could be the permanent fit.
