The Philadelphia 76ers got in on the trade action around the league, reportedly making a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Sixers are sending Caleb Martin to Dallas in return for Quentin Grimes and a second-round pick. The draft pick they are receiving is their own 2025 second-round pick. It was originally sent away as part of the trade to acquire George Hill back during the 2021-22 season.

Martin’s tenure with the Sixers was short lived. He signed a four-year, $35 million contract with Philadelphia last offseason. Martin, when he was on the court, played well in a Sixers uniform. He averaged 9.1 points and 4.4 rebounds while shooting 37.9% from beyond the arc. However, he struggled to stay on the floor, missing 18 games while battling a myriad of different injuries.

In exchange for Martin, the Sixers will receive Grimes from the Mavericks. Grimes, a 24-year-old guard, was having a solid season in Dallas. He is averaging 10.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 22.8 minutes per game. In Grimes, the Sixers are adding a solid outside shooter to their rotation. He is shooting 39.8% from 3-point range on 4.3 attempts per contest. Grimes should fit in well next to the Sixers’ core group due to his outside shooting, size (6-foot-4) and defensive abilities.

Grimes is on the final year of his contract and will become a restricted free agent after this season. Considering the Sixers gave up Martin, who was under contract for the foreseeable future, re-signing Grimes will likely be a priority this offseason.

In addition to acquiring Grimes and a draft pick, the Sixers also free up a bit more salary cap space. For a team with very minimal salary cap space, any added amount of flexibility could prove beneficial. For example, re-signing Guerschon Yabusele will be a tall task given their minimal cap space and the strong market for him in free agency. Adding an extra $4-5 million in space could potentially play a big role in their ability to retain Yabusele past this season.
