REPORT: Carson Wentz ‘has been Eagles guy for long time’

The 2016 NFL Draft will commence is less than 20 days, and whispers of the Philadelphia Eagles potentially trading up for a quarterback seem to be getting louder, not quieter.

In the latest edition of ESN Radio, Geoff Mosher said this of the Eagles interest in trading up for North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz:

"From what I'm told, Carson Wentz has been their guy for a long time. And what I was told is they would like to move up to [the] No. 1 [pick] to get him."

Mosher also noted that he doesn't believe that the Eagles interest in Wentz is a smokescreen, but that he doesn't sense that the Eagles believe they will ultimately land Wentz:

"But the same people who tell me that, and this is why I don't think it's a smokescreen, are the same people who express pessimism that this is going to happen because everybody knows how difficult it is to trade up to [the] No. 1 [pick]."

Mosher would go on to say that he doesn't believe that the Eagles will be able to facilitate a trade to land Wentz, and that he believes that the Eagles probably wouldn't trade up to land California quarterback Jared Goff if they were unable to land Wentz.

Chris Steuber echoed what I've been saying the past few weeks in that the NFL Draft has so many variables that it is hard to project what will change in a team's minds from day-to-day, let alone 19 days from now. The Eagles may very well view Wentz as their top target — much like they did with Marcus Mariota last year, but if a team with a higher pick than them decides to move up, it's going to be hard for the Eagles to compete with a potential trade offer to move up. So on April 9th, and apparently for some time previously, the Eagles have been high on Wentz, but that doesn't guarantee much more than the idea of them exploring a trade-up to be able to draft him.
