On Monday morning, the Philadelphia Eagles brought back quarterback Nick Foles on a two-year contract, signaling the imminent end of Chase Daniel's tenure with the team. While Howie Roseman and the front office would have loved to get some value for their 2016-17 backup quarterback, the team plans to release Daniel, according to ESPN.
"Yes, we did, and it was mutual," Daniel told 94 WIP in Philadelphia when asked if he requested to be released by the Eagles. "I believe I'm a starter in this league."
The Eagles have been working to trade Daniel in recent days to a team that would benefit the veteran signal-caller, but both sides felt the decision to release him now was mutually beneficial. The Eagles and Daniel's representatives will work on potentially adjusting his contract to benefit both parties.
The Eagles signed Daniel to a three-year, $21 million with the Eagles last offseason, and he is set to earn $8 million next season. Cutting him will only save the team $1 million, leaving the Eagles with $7 million in dead money. A trade would have been more optimal, but at this point it seems too late for that.
