For much of the offseason, any look at the Eagles has focused on how they will improve the wide receiver position, particularly through free agency.
But on Wednesday, a report surfaced that has the Eagles looking at improvements through a different outlet: trade.
The Eagles and Tennessee Titans are both rumored to be in discussions with the New Orleans Saints for wide receiver Brandin Cooks, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
Cooks was the 20th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft — the Eagles selected Marcus Smith with the 22nd overall pick that year — and is in the fourth year of a five-year rookie contract signed with New Orleans. He makes a base salary of $1.56 million in 2017.
Cooks had 78 catches in 2016 for 1,123 yards and eight touchdowns. In his three-year career, he has 215 catches for 2,861 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Before getting too excited, there are two things to consider with any deal here. First, it would likely require the Eagles to part ways with their first-round pick this season — either the 14th or 15th overall pick pending a coin flip at the Combine later this week.
Secondly, Mortensen does report that the Titans are the more likely suitor, but there are conflicting opinions on which team would be the favorite to acquire Cooks if talks progress to that point.
Any trade that reaches agreement does not become official for another week when the NFL league year opens on March 9 at 4 p.m.
