When Flyers GM Ron Hextall spoke on Sunday, it sounded like the Flyers were done in free agency. But that may not completely be the case.
According to Tony Marinaro, a Montreal radio host for TSN 690, veteran defenseman Andrei Markov is in contract talks with one team, the Flyers.
The Flyers could certainly be in the market to add a veteran defenseman, with the departures of Michael Del Zotto and Nick Schultz following the 2016-17 season without adding a player who would supposedly block out the young players as Hextall said he would avoid doing. The Flyers could also be looking to add someone to fill Schultz's previous role as the seventh defenseman or to fill a role that Mark Streit played last season as the veteran leader of the defensive group before being traded at the deadline.
Markov, 38, has played 16 seasons in the NHL, all with the Montreal Canadiens. The veteran defenseman is also representing himself and not using an agent in free-agency talks.
Markov played in 62 games last season, scoring six goals and adding 30 assists for 36 points. Markov is also just 10 games shy of reaching the 1,000-game milestone in his career. He has 119 goals and 453 assists for 572 points in his 16-year career.
The biggest question for the Flyers in adding any veteran defensemen through free agency is cap space. The Flyers are trying to save cap room for potential rookies to be added to the roster — like Sam Morin, Robert Hagg, Oskar Lindblom and Nolan Patrick — and would likely need to shed some cap space to get any move done.
