The signs were there weeks ago, but Steve Mason's agent confirmed on Thursday that the goalie who ranks third all-time on the Flyers wins list will not be returning to the team.
It hardly comes as a surprise, with the Flyers giving a new contract to Michal Neuvirth and Mason expressing frustration over the goalie tandem approach the Flyers used last season.
With the Flyers now in the market for a new free-agent goaltender, keep an eye on Brian Elliott, who spent the 2016-17 season with the Calgary Flames. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, early predictions are that Elliott will end up with the Flyers.
Elliott played in 49 games with the Flames last season and started in 45 games. He posted a 26-18-3 record with a 2.55 GAA and .910 save percentage.
Mason finishes his Flyers career with a record of 104-78-36 with a 2.47 GAA and .918 save percentage in 231 games over parts of five seasons.
Free agency officially begins on Saturday at noon.
