Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe tweets that according to sources, Matt Klentak will be named Phillies GM. Klentak has recently served as interim GM for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim over the summer after Jerry Dipoto resigned. The Angels have since hired Billy Eppler.
Klentak has built a nice resume since playing shortstop for Dartmouth for four years and graduating in 2002 with a degree in economics. During the 2003 season, he joined the front office for the Colorado Rockies and would then move on to work in MLB's Labor Relations Department.
The Andy MacPhail connection began in 2008 when he hired Klentak to be the Director of Baseball Operations for the Baltimore Orioles. Klentak moved on to the Angels organization in 2012 and since MacPhail took over as President of the Phillies, his name had been floated as a likely successor to Ruben Amaro Jr.
Yesterday, Klentak was reported to be among the finalists for Phillies GM along with Dan Kantrovitz of the A's and Chain Bloom of the Rays.
